Chilling night for trick or treaters

ANOTHER icy night is in store this evening as temperatures drop to minus-three degrees.

Halloween revellers will have to add a couple of layers to their costumes if stepping out after dark. It will be freezing, with a chilly temperature range between two degrees and minus-three degrees celsius.

And the cold won't be the least of their worries, as hail and possible thunderstorms are on the way.

Motorists are being advised to watch out for ground frost and ice on the roads tonight. However, the sun will come out tomorrow for a bright and dry day.

Any showers tonight will die out in the early hours of the morning and the first day of November is expected to be dry and sunny but, again, the cold hasn't gone anywhere.

Winter clothing will be fashion staples this weekend, as temperatures will linger between six and nine degrees.

The sun will come out in force again on Sunday, raising temperatures to a possible 10 degrees celsius.

A frosty night again on Sunday, but it won't be quite as chilly.

Met Eireann predict that Monday and Tuesday will bring a dry start to the week. Cloud cover will warm up the weather next week and temperatures will crawl into double figures.

This October cold snap is very unusual and the snow falls on Wednesday came as a huge surprise to weather experts, who had said that a fall of the white stuff was "very unlikely".
