Tried & Tested: Toners

I feel that a good going over with a toner is best for my self-tanned face. Anything cleansing is bound to clean off some of the brown but a good, light toner will keep my complexion fresh and glowing.

And it's not like I'm not going to lash on more tan in the morning, is it? Even though we like to have a nice, warm look to our faces in the summertime, don't neglect your skincare. A few of the toners, below, will help keep your skin in good nick.

THE BODY SHOP Aloe Calming Toner, €10.95 HHHHI I love aloe, and in fact have many, many aloe plants in my home. They grow like mad and are very easy to care for. Despite this, I don't much like aloe in gels or things -- which seems weird. The Body Shop have turned to this very healthy of plants in the creation of its new toner, and I found it to be pretty good. It does not irritate in any way, and my skin felt fine afterwards. I may have gotten over my aversion . . .

ISEREE Facial Toner, €2.49 HHHHH Well, let me tell you, I didn't even know what good value this toner was until after I'd used it. I was, of course, aware that the Iseree brand is Lidl's own, but I tend not to focus on cost until I've given them a good go. I have to say again: this is such good value for a terrific toner. Light as air, and soothing as a nice cup of tea, the toner flowed beautifully over my skin and left it feeling toned, not tight. A real winner.

ELEMIS Rehydrating Ginseng Toner, €27 HHHII OMG, the scent of this is gorgeous and refreshing. Even though I hate squirt bottles, it was all I could do not to spritz my entire self with this fragrant elixir. The only issue I had is a big one: my skin felt tight, not toned, once it dried on my face. Even when I wiped off the excess, as directed by the bottle, my pores felt a teeny tiny bit too dry. Massive sad face.

BENEFIT Moisture Prep Toning Lotion, €31.50 HIIII The funky make-up brand has created a line of skincare products, one or two of which have been reviewed here in the past. This has all the hallmarks of a Benefit product: excellent packaging and clean, fresh scent. Sadly, the consistency of this is so thick, I couldn't believe it. It calls itself 'toning lotion' which simply doesn't work for me. If I want a lotion, I'll use one. When I want a toner, I want fluidity and fast absorption, neither of which I found with this.

LUSH Tee Tree Toner, €5.45/100g HHHHI Really dislike a spray bottle? So do I, but oh, how refreshing is this toner by Lush! I am even getting over my severe dislike of the smell of tea tree -- too resin-y for me. This is so cool, so refreshing, so invigorating, that I can't help but like it. This is best for normal to oily skin, and it does a wonderful job of brightening the visage.
