Pricepoints: Peanut butter

ANYONE old enough to have watched Sesame Street will remember Mumford the puppet magician would declare, "A la peanut butter sandwiches!" to make his magic work.

This and other US TV shows of the period left many Irish kids of the ’70s and ’80s with a lingering affection for peanut butter which was clearly every American kid’s snack of choice.

Peanut butter is rich in protein and unsaturated fats but also high in calories so is not exactly diet food. It should be remembered that one of Elvis’s favourite snacks was a banana and peanut butter sandwich fried in butter; tasty but not good for your heart or waistline.

All commercial peanut butters have added oil (usually palm) to stabilise and stop it from separating. In general, the higher the proportion of nuts the healthier the peanut butter.

Very sweet with an odd biscuit-like flavour. Not to my taste at all. 3.5/10

PANDA, €2.39 PER 510G, 580CAL

The most liquid of all samples, sweet, almost sugary flavour with mild taste of nuts. The oily texture was disconcerting and detracted from the flavour. 3/10
