Gadget gal: Canon IXUS

ANOTHER year, another camera.

YAWN? You would think so. As cameras get smaller, one can no longer rave about compactness; as they get smarter, one can no longer go gaga over features. Or can one?

CAN ONE? One definitely can. The Canon Ixus 300 HS is terrifically compact and loaded with features.

As one acquaints oneself with the camera — pushing buttons and mooching around the menu — one sometimes makes what seems like a mistake, but is more like a fantastic discovery.

YOU DIDN’T MEAN TO PUSH THAT BUTTON, DID YOU? The button marked for the slowmotion video function, you mean? Uh, no, I didn’t, but I am glad I did! It is so, so cool!

This can make your child look like the next big GAA star and to make someone who likes to jump horses look ready for the RDS!

AH, NOW . . . Seriously! All you do is shoot the live action, and the camera, in playback, sloooows it doowwwwn and it looks really cool!

This is destined to be fun for everyone, and if you are the really creative type and like to put together family videos, you’ve got a technique that will make you an instant Spielberg.

Oh, and the snapshots are excellent as well, so it’s all good here in cameraland!

The Canon Ixus 300 HS retails for €369 and is available at good camera shops
