Femme Bookend: Disaster for a dub dare devil

RICHES TO RAGS?

Poor Jessie Woods might as well be the economy. One minute she’s ar muin na muice, living on Cristal and caviar, with a gorgeous entrepreneur at her side and jet-setting friends . . .

OOOH! . . . and the next, she’s back in innercity Dublin, slumped in front of the telly with her ugly stepsisters, frantically texting her unresponsive ex.

HOW SO?

Jessie is the presenter of Jessie Would, a do-or-dare show where listeners suggest crazy dares and Jessie does them — feeding 40 in an upmarket restaurant, skydiving, tightrope-walking across the Liffey.

OUR OWN DEAR CELTIC TIGER.

And then disaster strikes. Jessie accepts a free car and commercial sponsorship on-air. She’s sacked on the spot.

DOESN’T SOUND SO BAD TO ME.

Apparently it’s a no-no. And now that she’s sacked, it all comes crashing down. Her enormous credit-card bills come due, she loses the house, she loses the boyfriend.

BUT SHE HAS HER FAMILY?

Up to a point. Jessie’s father remarried after her mother died, nd she’s always hated and despised her too glam stepmother Joan and awful stepsisters. But now . . .

NO! NO!

She has to move back in, sleeping on the couch, and earning her keep by keeping house for the terrible trio.

HOW TERRIBLE?

Joan likes her house nice — scalloped drapes everywhere. Maggie is a pottymouthed civil servant in the Department of Internal Revenue. Sharon flips burgers for a living. And they’re all soap addicts.

CLEANLINESS NEXT TO GODLINESS?

EastEnders next to Coronation Street. It’s all set for laughs as Jessie gets to know the terrible twins, signs on for the dole, and tries to get Sam the Creep back.

FUNNY?

Full of great wisecracks. Jessie has a series of terms for men you date after a split — Defibrillator Guy, who brings you back to life. Punxatawney Phil, who dates, then ducks back into his burrow.

AND IS THERE A MR RIGHT?

Well, there happens to be the boy who always adored Jessie from a distance . . .

WILL I LOVE THIS?

If you love romance, crossed with wisecracks and slapstick horror, you will.
