Bride Chelsea bounces back beautifully

Chelsea Clinton entered the White House when she was a gawky 12-year-old girl with untamed curly hair, pre-brace teeth, chubby cheeks and a chinless profile.

She did not give 'good photo' as they say, and Bill Clinton's daughter suffered humiliation at the hands of cruel commentators simply of whose daughter she was.

What a joyous irony that America is now poised on the edge of its decking for the first photos of her wedding on Saturday July 31 when she marries her investment banker boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky.

More than 400 guests will attend the opulent bash at Astor Courts estate, located up the Hudson River from New York.

Former ugly duckling Chelsea is expected to look magnificent in an Oscar de la Renta dress, showing off her svelte figure, and with her natural strawberry blonde corkscrew curls straightened and highlighted. The braces are off, and the 30-year-old woman is every inch a powerful and stylish, and yes, it has to be said, very attractive New Yorker -- much in the ilk of Carrie and the girls, in fact.

We might assume she's pretty tough too. In November 1992, a sketch in the TV show Wayne's World (performed by popular comedians of the time, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey) made fun of the 12-year-old new First Daughter when it was implied she was incapable of causing males to "Schwing!" After complaints, the joke was edited out of all repeats and syndication rebroadcasts of the sketch.

Less easy to erase are the callous comments meted out on America's conservative radio and TV shows, especially by right-wing political commentator Rush Limbaugh. He despised the Clintons and reportedly lampooned Chelsea on a TV show as "the White House dog".

The metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly must have been excruciating for a young Chelsea, who grew up with grown men bullying her over her appearance. She was aged 18 when Senator John McCain, speaking to a Republican dinner in June 1998, made an odious joke at her expense, asking: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." He was referring to the former Attorney General of the United States.

Now the former president's daughter, looking radiant these days, is set to have the glitziest wedding in the States this summer, and President Obama is expected to drop by.

Her fiance, investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, is dark, rugged and very nice in the looks department. Chelsea's trust in men is, remarkably, intact.

Chelsea was reported to be in the room when her father and his aides discussed how to publicly admit to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Chelsea read prosecutor Kenneth Starr's lurid official report into the affair. When her father heard what she had done, he is said to have wept.

Former president Bill Clinton has been on a diet for the forthcoming wedding, and has reportedly lost 13 pounds out of his target of 15. Hillary Clinton has been having pictures of potential flower arrangements emailed to her as she conducts diplomacy around the world.

Yet, Chelsea in a wedding dress is what everyone wants to see, and further proof that the plain, awkward girl has blossomed into the prettiest of bridal princesses.
