The Whisperer by Donato Carrisi (Abacus), €12.99

The advantage The Whisperer has over other literary phenomena which seem to take on a life of their own, is that it stands up as a properly written novel, with Donato Carrisi balancing his characters and situtions and drip-feeding just enough back-information to keep the reader engaged.

Revolving around the discovery of six severed arms buried in a forest clearing, which are reckoned to be linked to missing girls, the story puts criminologist Goran Gavila and young female police officer Mila Vasquez together as the classic odd couple in the search for the rest of the bodies and the perpetrator of the crime.

Gripping from the off, The Whisperer plays all sorts of games with the reader but, crucially, doesn't let you down when it comes to the pay-off.
