Celebrity Health Check: Keith Barry Mentalist

DO YOU have any ailments/health concerns? At the moment, I'm suffering a little with my lower back, probably due to carrying my two kids everywhere.

I'm attending a physical therapist who's using dry needling which is helping it a lot.

How would you rate your energy levels?

My work hours can sometimes be crazy long, but luckily I have naturally high energy levels. I need one crash day around every three months and that keeps me going for the next three months

Do you get your five a day?

Definitely. I have a dodgy digestive system and can sometimes suffer greatly with indigestion. However, I find that eating plenty of fruit and veg completely solves my digestive problems.

How would you rate your stress levels?

I know it can be a problem for a lot of people, but luckily I just seem to cope well with stressful situations. I really only get highly strung if my wife or kids are sick.

How's your sleep?

I sleep very well, but probably not enough. I average around five hours a night but sometimes it can be as little as three or four depending on my schedule. I like being creative and writing at night. My mind seems to work best when the sun goes down.

Do you take vitamins/supplements?

I take vitamin C and two spoonfuls of cod liver oil every morning. After a hard workout I'll have a protein shake and amino acids.

Do you exercise?

Between three to six times per week – it's essential to stay fit for my live shows and for my TV stunts. I have a personal trainer called Maija in BodyByrne Fitness. Since working with her my body has changed completely. I've lost 15pc body fat and gained lean muscle.

Do you cook from scratch?

My wife does nearly all of the cooking in our house and it's all from scratch.

How many alcoholic beverages would you consume in a week?

I only drink once a week. If I'm at home. I'll have half a bottle of wine. If I'm out I'll have a skinful and don't count.

What would you find hard to give up?

I'm a real carnivore and love my meat. I have cut down over the past year and now eat fish two or three days a week instead.

Do you have any health goals?

Overall, my health is pretty good at the moment, so I guess I'll try to just stay fit and healthy as best I can.

Breakfast: A vanilla protein shake poured over mixed berries, banana, nuts/seeds.

Lunch: Roast chicken with green beanS.

Dinner: Salmon with A green salad and balsamic vinegar.

Snacks: Mixed nuts, organic natural yoghurt.

Beverages: Three coffees, multiple glasses of water.

Elsa's Verdict: Keith, your diet is great, but I'd suggest that you include a portion of slow release carbohydrates with at least two of your meals. I'd recommend you add 2 tbsp of oats to your breakfast and fill 1/4 of your lunch/dinner plate with either brown rice, quinoa or sweet potato for extra vitamins, minerals and fibre.
