Lifeguards save two from sea

TWO people were rescued after they got into difficulty swimming at one of the country's safest beaches.

They were part of a family group that was enjoying a swim at the Blue Flagged Inch Beach in Co Kerry when they suddenly found themselves way out of their depth.

It is thought that the sudden change in the water's depth was due to shifting sands related to last winter's storms.

Lifeguards on duty at the time were able to bring them back to safety.

Top doctor dies of Ebola virus

One of Liberia's most high-profile doctors has died of Ebola, highlighting the risks facing health workers trying to combat the deadly disease.

Dr Samuel Brisbane is the first Liberian doctor to die in an outbreak the World Health Organisation (WHO) says has killed 129 people in the West African nation.

A Ugandan doctor working in the country died earlier this month.

The WHO says the outbreak has also killed 319 people in Guinea and 224 in Sierra Leone.

Kingsley's snoozy part

Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley had a bit of a lie-down and even occasionally nodded off while filming his latest movie.

The 70-year-old said he had the luxury of relaxing on a couch while making stop-motion animation The Boxtrolls.

"I did most of my recordings lying down, reclining on a kind of sofa bed," he said at the convention in San Diego.

New hope for Parkinson's

The results of a worldwide study into Parkinson's could help revolutionise how the degenerative disease is treated.

Researchers looked at DNA from more than 100,000 people with and without the condition for the study.

They identified a further six sections of DNA to the 22 already known to increase the chance of a person having Parkinson's.

The findings could help scientists to find new pathways involved in brain cell death and lead to new ways to prevent and treat the condition.
