HE spent six months getting used to the accent and now US actor Josh Hartnett is set to return for an Irish summer.

The Pearl Harbour star will return to Dublin next month to begin filming on the second season of Oscar-wining director Sam Mendes' dark TV drama Penny Dreadful.

The next instalment of the Showtime gothic series, which will consist of 10 episodes, is expected to premiere on the small screen in 2015.

It is believed that 35-year-old Josh will once again reside in the Shelbourne Hotel for the duration of the shoot.

He was often seen strolling the streets of Dublin on his days off from the Penny Dreadful set and was regularly joined by his girlfriend, 25-year-old British actress Tamsin Egerton.

Extras

The couple have been dating since 2012, when they met on the set of director Roland Joffe's Singularity.

Dozens of Irish extras were hired to appear in season one of Penny Dreadful and it was worth €33m to the economy.

A number of Dublin landmarks also feature in scenes in the supernatural horror, including Temple Bar, Dublin Castle and the Guinness Brewery

The show, which is set in Victorian London and brings together characters from classic literature including Dracula and Dorian Gray, has gone down a treat with audiences. It will make its San Diego Comic-Con debut on the first day of the convention later this month.

Meanwhile, filming has started on series three of Vikings in Wicklow.

There have been several additions to the cast, among them Ben Robson and The Tudors actor Lothaire Bluteau
