Jail for man who mugged gran

A MAN who mugged an 83-year-old woman has been sentenced to five years jail.

Grandmother-of-seven Bridget Campbell spent a week in intensive care and underwent emergency surgery after the robbery.

Trevor O'Shea (35) of Bulfin Park, Birr, Co Offaly, was found guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in January of robbing Ms Campbell on March 30, 2010 outside the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin.

Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced O'Shea to five years, with the final year suspended.

OAP killed in horror crash

AN 83-year-old man has died in a crash in Co Meath.

The two-car crash happened at around 12.20pm yesterday in Dunshaughlin.

The victim, named locally as Alphonsus 'Phonsie' McEntaggart, was driving when his car collided with a second on the Dublin to Dunshaughlin road.

Gardai were today appealing for witnesses.

Dunshaughlin councillor Gerry O'Connor described him as a "terrific character".

He told the Herald: "He's a complete gentleman and he is so respected in the town.

"He is so popular, a terrific character.

"All our thoughts are with his family now as they grieve this sad loss."

Killer suspect had 20 wounds

A POST-mortem examination on the man suspected of a killing spree in France showed he had 20 bullet wounds, though only two were fatal, officials said.

Mohamed Merah (23) was killed by a bullet to the temple and one to the abdomen.

Merah, who claimed links with al Qa'ida, is believed to have killed seven people in three attacks in and around Toulouse. He died in a gunfight after a 32-hour stand-off with police.
