SALES of the Herald and the Irish Independent now account for over a third of all daily newspapers sold here, according to latest results.

The ABC audit of newspaper sales in Ireland for July to December 2014 shows a combined daily sale of 162,014 (33.5pc) for both papers.

The Herald, with a daily sale for the period of 49,512, has once again proved to be Dublin's best-loved paper.

The ABC figures show that Independent News and Media titles continue to top the quality daily, quality Sunday and popular Sunday newspaper markets.

The Irish Independent leads in the quality daily newspaper market, accounting for 50.3pc of all sales, increasing its market share by 0.6pc on the previous year, and selling 112,502 copies compared to The Irish Times (76,882) and the Irish Examiner (34,424) who both lost market share.

In the weekend market, sales of both the Sunday Independent and Sunday World represents 55pc of all Sunday sales.

Speaking on the figures, INM Editor-in-Chief Stephen Rae (inset left) said: "It is encouraging to see that INM titles remain the dominant players in the industry.

"The Irish Independent and the Sunday Independent have both grown in market share which is a testament to the quality of journalism we produce week in, week out."
