In Brief: Soldiers killed in barracks raid

Al-Qa'ida militants have overrun an army base in southern Yemen, capturing heavy weapons and turning them on soldiers in intense clashes that left 61 dead.

Yesterday's battle near the town of Zinjibar killed 36 government troops and 25 of the militants, an official said. Scores were wounded from both sides.

Militants seized control of the town in May, taking advantage of political turmoil linked to the uprising against then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh. He stepped down last month in a US-backed power transfer deal that Washington hoped would allow Yemen's new leaders to move against al-Qa'ida.

Gun battle at rapper's gig

A rapper said his thoughts went out to the 14 people wounded in a shootout outside a nightclub where he was due to perform.

Nipsey Hussle issued a statement saying he strongly opposed gun violence and that his fans knew he represented "nothing but peace and progress through hard work".

Meanwhile, the search continued for two suspects for the weekend shooting outside The Clubhouse Music Venue in Tempe, Arizona.

Authorities say at least 250 people were outside the venue when three men began arguing and opened fire at one another.

Guitarist Ronnie is dead at 64

Guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who formed the band that bore his name and performed with some of rock's heavy hitters, has died.

His agent, Jim Douglas, said Montrose (64) died on Saturday at home in California.

Mr Douglas said Montrose had been battling prostate cancer and "personal demons". Montrose performed with Sammy Hagar, Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs and the Edgar Winter Group.
