In brief: Call for action over Kosovo

British Foreign Secretary William Hague and his German counterpart are urging Serbia and Kosovo to resolve their differences through diplomacy and not risk wasting a "crucial opportunity for progress".

Mr Hague and Guido Westerwelle wrote in Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the two must find a solution which "respects Kosovo's borders" and moves both Serbia and Kosovo towards EU membership.

Volcano burst starts panic

A volcano that has been spewing lava and clouds of searing gas high into the air let out a new, powerful burst, sending panicked villagers streaming down the sides of the mountain.

One person who fell as he was fleeing was injured, said the head of the search and rescue team. Mount Karangetang on Siau Island, Indonesia, started spitting clouds of gas and lava up to 1,900 feet on Friday. Later, hot ash tumbled down its slopes, triggering new panic.

Ban Ki-Moon visits Japan

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has visited a shelter in Japan's disaster zone to offer support to people evacuated from their homes after a March earthquake and tsunami sent a nuclear plant into meltdown.

Ban is meeting Japan's prime minister and other leaders in Tokyo after he visited an evacuation centre in Fukushima city.

The city is about 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the severely damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

'Monroe sex film' fails to sell

A Spanish concert promoter has found no buyers at an auction in Argentina for a 1940s stag film that he claims shows an underage Marilyn Monroe having sex before she became a star.

The auction was a flop -- nobody came forward willing to pay Mikel Barsa's starting price of £294,000 (¤336,600).

Mr Barsa said it did not help matters that a spokeswoman for Monroe's estate called the whole thing a fraud in an interview. He said he was still negotiating with an unidentified buyer at about half the price he was hoping for.
