'I'll rape garda's parents and kill Muslims', cancer patient claimed

Simon Meates (42) further claimed he was going to sink his teeth into a garda's neck and rape the officer's mother and father.

Judge Anne Watkin sentenced Meates to two months in prison and ordered him to enter into a one-year probation bond.

The defendant, of Glenbourne Walk in Leopardstown, admitted to threatening and abusive behaviour and resisting Garda Edward Magee at Marine Road in Dun Laoghaire on June 4 last year.

Dun Laoghaire District Court heard that gardai stopped the defendant and seized alcohol from him.

Meates started to strip off, taking off his coat and T-shirt and trying to remove his jeans.

The court heard there were a lot of people around, and Meates was ordered to stop.

He adopted an aggressive stance towards Gda Magee, and was breathing heavily.

Meates then threatened Gda Magee, saying "I'll bite your f**kin' neck" and "I'll stick my teeth into your neck".

Disgraceful

He was restrained against a wall by Gda Magee but he managed to swing his face towards the officer's face.

Meates then told the garda that he would "rape your mother and father". He also said: "I'll kill Muslims. I've plenty of time."

Defence solicitor Ronnie Lynam said Meates accepted his behaviour was disgraceful.

Mr Lynam said Meates had been in prison in the weeks leading up to the incident.

While in prison, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and had surgery.

He did not take early release, deciding to stay in jail while recovering from his operation.

Mr Lynam said this incident took place over a bank holiday weekend. Meates, who suffers from depression, had been staying in, but he realised he needed to get out of the house.

He went for a pint, then met some friends, drank whiskey and smoked heroin.

Meates said he was "disgusted" with himself and his behaviour "did not sit well" with him.

He said he did not know why he was so aggressive, but he has had emotional problems since his parents died in 2013.

He continues to receive treatment for cancer.
