HSBC to reveal Madoff affairs Woman (100) graduates

A HIGH Court judge has directed the Irish arm of European banking giant HSBC to clearly outline the extent to which monies were paid over to companies of jailed US fraudster Bernard Madoff.

Mr Justice Frank Clarke said yesterday that HSBC Institutional Trust Services (Ireland) Ltd, Grand Canal Square, Dublin, should incorporate the specified pleas in its defence to the actions against it by two mutual funds over alleged losses incurred after monies were allegedly passed on to Madoff companies.

The judge adjourned to Tuesday next the making of further directions for management of the cases.

Woman (100) graduates

A US woman finally achieved her ambition of graduating from college the day before she died and nearly three weeks after celebrating her 100th birthday.

Harriet Richardson Ames died on Saturday, the day after receiving her diploma at her bedside in Concord, New Hampshire.

The retired schoolteacher died, pleased that she had accomplished her goal, her daughter said. Ms Ames had been in hospice care.

"She had what I call a 'bucket list', (a list of things to do) and that was the last thing on it," Marjorie Carpenter said.

Ms Ames had earned a two-year teaching certificate in 1931 at Keene Normal School, now Keene State College.
