Hornets boss backs Gilmartin

WATFORD boss Malky Mackay is delighted with the impact that Irish keeper Rene Gilmartin has made at the Championship club.

Dubliner Gilmartin (25) made only his third appearance for the Hornets in Saturday's FA Cup clash with Hartlepool United but the U21 cap played a blinder as Watford moved into the fourth round with a 4-1 win.

A Gilmartin save prevented Hartlepool from taking a 2-0 lead and was the turning point in the game. "When Rene made the save we were convincing from there," said Mackay. "He was fantastic, he came in and again he was very assured. He's a big personality and is someone with a good future at this football club."

Gilmartin made his league debut as a teenager for Walsall and joined Watford last summer.
