Hargreaves tops in Park

Australian-based Brandon Hargreaves, who has declared for Ireland and joined Clonliffe Harriers, out-sprinted Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF to win the Irish Runner 5-Mile in Dublin's Phoenix Park last Saturday.

Siobhan O'Doherty won the women's race, beating Teresa McGloin by just six seconds. Galway marathon woman Nicola Duncan was third. First over 40 was Rob Cross of Crusaders.

Brave centurion Jennings

At the Viking Marathon, Mary Jennings of host club Waterford AC managed to complete her 100th marathon - just nine weeks after breaking a bone in her foot.

Jennings went over on her foot at the K Club BHAA 10km in Straffan. When a fracture was diagnosed, she was put in plaster.

She had long planned to run her 100th marathon in her home town of Waterford and her determination not to let family and supporters down saw her through.

She finished in a respectable time of 3 hrs 52 mins and - a bonus - won her age category. English visitor Keith Russell won the race with Pauline Curley of Tullamore first woman.

Thomas still setting Barr

A winning time of 49.91 secs for Thomas Barr in the 400m hurdles proved the highlight of the Le Cheile International at the club's new track in Leixlip.

Barr beat Australian visitor Ian Dewhurst comfortably.

On a chilly night with some strong winds, Sam McEntee of Australia won the mile in 3mins 58secs, with new Irish international athlete Kevin Batt third in 3:59.53 and Donore's John Travers fourth in 4:02.83.

Highlight of the women's programme was  the 800m  where Leevale's Laura Crowe beat Rose Anne Galligan of Newbridge. Maria McCambridge of DSD won in 4mins 19.88secs.

Fagan suffers defeat

Mark Christie beat his Mullingar Harriers clubmate  Martin Fagan to win the St Coca's 5km in Kilcock in 14 mins 6 secs - a new course record.  It was a first defeat for Fagan since returning from a two-year drugs ban. Charlotte Kearney of Donadea Runners was first woman.

McGinley the ace in Ards

Eddie McGinley and Gladys Ganiel were the winners of the Ards Half Marathon on Friday evening, while in Ballinlough, Co Roscommon, Michael Mulhare of Portlaoise and Michelle McGee, running in DSD colours for the first time, were the winners at the Lake O'Flynn 10km.
