Gilroy's dilemma

PAT GILROY must find a way to instill the hunger needed to retain the Sam Maguire or risk another humiliation like the one dished out by Mayo last Saturday, according to Dublin legend Coman Goggins.

Goggins believes their crushing 12-point defeat at the hands of James Horan’s men stemmed from a |lethargic performance and a serious increase in intensity and work rate is required.

“For the second time in three weeks, away from the open expanses of Croke Park, the Dubs were once again |out-played by a far hungrier team, who sensing they had an opponent on the rack, kicked on and had one of those nights in front of goal that you generally only dream of,” he said.

“Any drop-off in intensity or work-rate will drag Dublin back into the pack and offer up hope to their opponents that there is scalp for the taking.

“There are clearly a couple of areas that need to be addressed, principal amongst them, how to get guys who have landed that elusive All-Ireland medal, to have the same level of hunger to chase down another?

“He won’t know until the crunch comes in the summer whether the attitude and application is at the pertinent levels.”
