Garda hero Hickey joins board of RMI

A DECORATED garda hero -- described as the best officer never to be Commissioner -- has been appointed to the board of Risk Management Ireland (RMI).

Tony Hickey is the force's former chief of detectives, who led many major murder inquiries, including that of Veronica Guerin.

Assistant Commissioner Hickey's team broke up the notorious John Gilligan gang. Many were surprised when the Government failed to make him Garda Commissioner, as he was widely regarded as the force's most accomplished investigator.

He has joined Michael Baume, former chief information officer at AIB and John Smyth, the one-time chief executive of First Active, to the advisory board of RMI which was set up in 1993 by former members of the Army and the Garda, specialising in protection from kidnapping.
