FOUR men have been seriously injured after a rally car left the road during an event in Co Meath and crashed into a field.

The incident happened near Athboy today just before 4pm.

The men were at a distance from the road behind a spectators cordon when the accident happened.

It is understood more than one car left the road and crashed into the field, but only one struck the four men.

One of the victims had to be airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin while another was rushed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.

The remaining two victims were brought to hospital in Drogheda.

Sources say the victims have suffered bone fractures of differing degrees.

The injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The roads were closed at time of the accident to allow the car rally to take place.
