A MEMBER of the Fianna Fail national executive has been found dead on the side of a Galway road.

Gardai believe that Frank Barrett's death was a tragic accident but are awaiting the outcome of a post mortem.

Mr Barrett's body was discovered in a ditch on the Headford Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It is thought that the 59-year-old may have stopped his car to change a tyre immediately before his death.

Investigators are still not sure if he fell into the ditch and sustained fatal injuries or if he suffered a heart attack.

His car was found very close to the inside edge of the road alongside the ditch. The post mortem examination is due to take place at Galway University Hospital today.

Chairman of the Fianna Fail Comhairle Dail Cheanntair in Galway, Nevin Breen, said that he had been greatly shocked to hear of the death.

He said: "Frank was my best friend and we travelled everywhere together. He always had a smile on his face and that is how we will remember him."

He is survived by his wife, Gabrielle and four children.
