Father caught with 'theft' tool

A FORKLIFT driver who was hanging around cars armed with a screwdriver has claimed he had the tool because he was putting up the Christmas tree lights.

Joseph Doyle (37) ran away from gardai but was caught as he tried to discard the screwdriver in the snow at Ellensborough Close, Tallaght, on December 7 last year.

Doyle, a father-of-two, of Ardmore Close, Fortunestown Lane, Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to possession of articles for use in a theft. He was fined €250.

Austria deal on stolen treasure

Austria may soon lend Mexico an ancient Aztec headdress in a move to end a long dispute between the two nations.

The headdress is now at the Austrian museum of ethnology. Museum head Sabine Haag said the two countries are discussing putting the object on display in Mexico. Mexico has been lobbying Austria for decades for the return of the headdress, looted in the 16th century.

Dad's torment over jailed spy

The 94-year-old father of an ex-US navy analyst convicted of spying for Israel said he can not sleep at night because of his son's life prison sentence.

Morris Pollard said the 1987 sentence of his son Jonathan Pollard is "such an overwhelming miscarriage of justice" that he keeps "waking up fighting with people" in his imagination.

Jonathan Pollard was convicted of passing US secrets to Israel.
