X Factor guru Simon Cowell cries on Piers Morgan show

X Factor supremo Simon Cowell has become the latest celebrity to cry on television.

The talent show guru will show his usually well hidden sensitive side when he appears on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories next week.

Cowell, nicknamed the ‘Mr Nasty’ of reality TV, had to hold back his tears as he re-lived the moment he heard of his father Eric’s death a decade ago.

The 50-year-old welled up when he told Piers Morgan about the tragic irony of phoning his mother Julie to share his “euphoria” that his group Westlife in 1999 had their first No 1 hit, only to be informed his dad was dead. Two weeks ago Prime Minister Gordon Brown became tearful on the ITV1 talk show when telling of the death of his baby daughter Jennifer, while in an earlier series glamour model Katie Price — Jordan — wept as she revealed she had been sexually assaulted as a child and Dannii Minogue broke down when she spoke about her sister Kylie’s breast cancer battle.

In his interview, to be aired at 9pm on ITV1 next Saturday, Cowell chokes back the emotion when his mother Julie describes the fraught transatlantic phone call in which she broke the news of her husband’s death.

Visibly shaken, Cowell starts to speak, then pauses to catch his breath before stumbling through his account of what happened.

He said: “It was a horrible, horrible, horrible time. You believe everyone is going to live forever and they don’t and all the stuff you think you care about, the hit records and stuff like that, it’s just meaningless.”
