Twilight actors star attractions

Twilight actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were the star attractions as the latest instalment in the vampire movie saga premiered in Los Angeles.

Hundreds of fans who had camped out for days were treated to a glimpse of the stars on the red carpet as they stopped and posed for pictures.

Breaking Dawn: Part 1, which opens in LA this weekend, sold out more than 2,500 screenings for its debut in the US this week, more than the seventh Harry Potter film.

The fourth part of five teen vampire films accounted for 93pc of advance sales at Fandango.com. The film is predicted to gross around $300m in its opening week.

Breaking Dawn, the final novel by Stephenie Meyer, has been divided into two films.

In Part 1, Bella Swan, played by Stewart, marries Pattinson's character, vampire Edward Cullen, and becomes pregnant.

The Twilight series hasn't matched the appeal outside the US of Harry Potter, still the biggest movie franchise of all time with ¤5.6bn in worldwide ticket sales. Globally, the three Twilight films have averaged ¤440m, below the Potter films' ¤708m average.

Also on the red carpet last night was fellow Twilight star Taylor Lautner, actresses Heather Locklear and Jennifer Love Hewitt and actor Rob Lowe with his wife Sheryl Berkoff.
