Miriam O'Callaghan has revealed she turned down an offer to move full-time into light entertainment because she will "never" give up working in current affairs.

The Prime Time host's summertime chat show, Saturday Night with Miriam, is set to return to our screens tomorrow night, and while the presenter loves working on light-hearted topics she told the Herald she won't opt out of news.

"I could never give it up. It's been on offer, but my DNA is as a current affairs journalist," she said.

"That's what I am to my core and I would never give up it. When you do work on current affairs that matter, you feel as though you're doing some good as a journalist."

While the RTE star (above) is still happy to work on serious issues on Prime Time, she admitted her weekend talk shows are like a breath of fresh air for her.

"On Prime Time we have to deal with very serious and often very sad stories," she said.

"But when you're working upstairs in the entertainment part of RTE you're by and large dealing with happy stories so it's great."
