HE may be ready to leave the acting world behind him, but Irish actor Jack Gleeson has said he loves playing one of the most hated men on television.

The 21-year-old portrays the evil and sadistic King Joffrey Baratheon in the smash hit TV drama Game of Thrones.

Gleeson, who said he intends to quit professional acting when he finishes the HBO programme, is gearing up for the fourth series of the popular show.

"It is the best fun to play such a hate inspiring character," said the young actor, who hails from Cork.

"To get that reaction out of someone is very satisfying."

The highly-anticipated new series could be the end of the road for the child king with speculation that Gleeson's character will meet his maker.

And the actor, who was 17 when he auditioned for the role, has said that he is looking forward to leaving the fame of the show behind him.

"It was always a re-creation beforehand, but when I started doing Game of Thrones perhaps the reality was made too real for me," said Gleeson.

"The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn't something I gravitate towards."

Gleeson is looking forward to normal life as a student at Trinity College Dublin and to continue work with his theatre company, Collapsing Horse.
