The Irish contingent on the set of top drama A.D. is growing as Dublin actor Emmett Scanlan has landed a part in the biblical drama.

Emmett, known mostly for his role as Brendan Brady in Hollyoaks, will play Saul in the NBC drama that follows on from where hit show The Bible left off.

Emmett posted a picture of himself in character to his Instagram account.

"First look at the unapologetic Saul. Probably the most important character I've played to date," he said.

Irish actress Charlene McKenna also stars in the popular drama which is currently on a break from filming in Africa.

It's been a good year for Emmett as he starred in the mega blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, top thriller The Fall, was named in Variety magazine's list of international actors on the rise and he also got engaged to his former Hollyoaks co-star Claire Cooper.

Emmett (35) popped the question on Christmas Eve.

"There are over a million ways to ask the question, but only one real answer," he captioned an Instagram picture of them kissing with glasses of red wine.

The love birds celebrated their big news by hitting the local pub on Christmas Eve with close friends ,including actor turned author Eoin Macken.

His sentiments were echoed by Claire who tweeted her happiness at the big news writing "I am a very happy Cooper today… Soon to be Scanlan. Thank you for your lovely messages".

The happy news comes four years after the pair are reported to have started dating.

They have since jetted off to Hong Kong to celebrate the new Year.
