SHE is best known in Ireland for portraying gangster's moll and rape victim Siobhan on smash-hit crime drama Love/Hate.

However, across the water Charlie Murphy has been showing her versatility after landing a string of acting roles on UK TV.

Achieving acclaim for her role on period drama The Village, the actress will hit BBC screens in upcoming drama Happy Valley.

The six-part series kicks off this Tuesday and will see Charlie (26) once again portray the darker side of life in the gritty drama.

Ransom

"I play Anne Gallagher, the daughter of a very affluent self-made businessman and I get kidnapped for ransom," Charlie told the Herald.

"So it's not a rom-com, it's dark and gritty – it was lots of fun to shoot despite the subject matter."

While she is used to being cast in harsher roles, the actress said she has become a pro at switching off after a long-day of filming.

"I seem to get cast in very intense roles. But I don't take the work home with me. It's important to keep some distance between yourself and the character," Charlie added.

The Wexford-born actress is currently shooting the fifth series of Love/ Hate and the second series of period BBC drama The Village.
