Best of luck to true TV star Anne

Confirmation that RTE newsreader Anne Doyle is to retire will be greeted with a certain sadness. Her background as first a librarian and then an executive officer in the Consular Service has contributed to her constant professional standards of dignity, grace and calm under pressure.

For more than three decades, she has brightened up living rooms even when the news itself was grim.

Despite being held in high regard by viewers from all over the country, she has never been top of the RTE big earners list.

We've become used to aspiring TV stars these days sometimes wanting recognition for being famous as much as for a job well done.

But young people who aspire to 'be something in television' could do worse than look to Anne for inspiration.

We wish her all the best for her retirement.
