Baby arrival gives Laura free pass to Voice final

A FORTUNATE singer received a free pass into the live finals of the Voice of Ireland after her opponent went into premature labour.

Five groups of performers were due to take to the stage for the latest round of battles which aired on the RTE show last night.

However, Armagh native Catherine Hughes was left disappointed when she was ruled out of team Jamelia because she went into labour hours before her performance, allowing her competitor Laura May Lenehan to receive an automatic pass through to the live finals.

Mum of two Catherine (29) received the bad news while in the hospital after giving birth to her second son Eoin. "I was disappointed because I had worked really hard to get to that stage," Catherine told the Herald.

Mentor Jamelia said that the labour was god's way of choosing between Catherine and Laura after admitting that she wasn't sure who she would pick.

Last night also saw rapper Jamie Hartigan being sent home by ex-Westlife star Kian Egan, who instead chose to go with Dublin teenager Laura O'Connor.

Also through to the live finals are Cork singer Danica Holland from Team Kian, Bray singer Peter Whitford, who beat two singers in a three-way battle to impress mentor Dolores O'Riordan and Galway singer Emma Walsh who made it through on Team Bressie.
