50 years for Late Late is a miracle

MUCH as one hates to differ with someone like broadcast legend Gaybo, he was a little wide of the mark this week as he compared the survival of The Late Late Show for 50 years to long-running US chat show The Tonight Show. "Not in number of viewers," he says, "but the proportion of people who watch it."

First off, homegrown entertainment isn't confined to three channels in the States -- but, more to the point, The Tonight Show really is an upbeat entertainment show, noticeably devoid of the sort of excruciating yawnfests that drag on for ages at the half-hearted hands of a flagging DJ here.
