FROM Hollyoaks' bad boy to flexing his action hero muscles - Emmett Scanlan has bagged a part in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The 33-year-old Dubliner plays a riot guard in the James Gunn-directed blockbuster, acting alongside A-list stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Glenn Close.

The flick, which has just been released in the US and made over €70m in its opening weekend at the box office, is a Marvel Studios feature - the team behind comic book adaptations Captain America and The Avengers.

It tells the story of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), a space adventurer who finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb.

Clontarf native Emmett, who has a daughter named Kayla, told of his delight to be part of the big screen project.

"Being part of the comic book genre, working with guys at the top of their game is something you hope comes around more and more during your career. On the off chance it's a one chance you have to suck the life out of every minute, which I did," he said.

"Seven weeks after leaving a great show, James Gunn took a shot on me - he gave me my first gig.

"He gave a guy with no track record on blockbusters the chance.

"I've been part of something special, something epic."

Emmett's big break in the industry came in 2010 when he landed the regular part of villainous Brendan Brady on Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

He made his exit in 2012 to explore pastures new and ventured to America to seek work.

His indie film Charlie Casanova, directed by Terry McMahon, made waves overseas, picking up three prestigious awards at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, including an award for Best Actor.

He reunited with Terry in 2013 for the film Patrick's Day.

Emmett has since starred opposite Jamie Dornan in the RTE/BBC co-production The Fall and will return in the next season, which is due to air in the autumn.

"I've been lucky to surround myself with people my better, working on great shows, great movies for great people," he said.
