MEET the football-mad family who named three of their young sons after Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and his legendary players.

Fanatical Red Devils fan Derek Reddell was adamant his young son would get the best start in life possible, and could think of no better way than naming him after the man who's been at the helm at the Theatre of Dreams for nearly 27 years.

And so Tallaght native Alex Reddell (10) was handed the same first name as the 71-year-old Scot, who announced his retirement yesterday.

But Derek's love of all things Man United did not stop there and with wife Brenda's blessing he named his third son Eric (6) after French footballer and ex Man-United great Eric Cantona.

Controversial

When their fourth son was born on New Year's Day five years ago, he was given the same name as long-serving Man United winger Ryan Giggs

Mum Brenda said their household is a Man United stronghold and the only son to miss out on a Man United name was the couple's eldest son, Craig (16).

Brenda is not a football fan but was more than obliging when her hubby suggested the familiar names.

"I love the names and we started with Alex and then Eric came along and then we continued it from there," she explained.

But there was one controversial former Man United star who Brenda refused to name her sons after.

"When it came to the youngest, we eventually went with Ryan. I think Derek wanted to name him Roy after Roy Keane but I said no, I wouldn't agree to that. Roy Reddell? That's where you have to draw the line," laughed Brenda.

"They really are big fans and daddy is an absolutely massive fan. When a match is on, they all shove on to the sofa and are glued to the TV and I'm thrown out," Brenda told the Herald.

Despite being hardcore United fans, the Reddells do not make the trek across to Old Trafford often because of the expense, but lucky Alex, who is a pupil at local primary school Ard Mhuire in Belgard, did get the chance to visit when he was younger.

"I didn't meet any of the players, but my dad did and he gave me a ball before that was signed by a lot of old players, like Ryan Giggs," Alex told the Herald.
