THEY have bagged an Oscar nomination for their song in a movie about Nelson Mandela and now U2 are signing up to write the original music for another silver screen production.

Frontman Bono (below) and his band mate the Edge are expected to compose the music for Sing Street, an Irish film being directed by their pal John Carney.

Dublin-born Carney was behind Glen Hansard's award-winning 2007 movie Once and is also the co-creator of TV drama series Bachelors Walk.

Carney established a friendship with U2 years ago and is no doubt thrilled that the group have come on board with his project.

Sing Street will tell the story of Cosmo, a 14-year-old who is dealing with the stress of his parents' marriage, a drop-out brother and bullies at a new school.

The movie is to begin shooting later in the year.

Meanwhile, U2 decided to introduce their new single Invisible to fans last weekend and did it with a charitable twist.

As a result of making the track available to download on iTunes, with all the proceeds going to father-of-four Bono's fundraising partnership Red, they raised €2,324,990 in 36 hours.
