Mud, sweat and stars will make it an Electric Picnic to remember

A HOST of stars will join the tens of thousands of revellers at this weekend's Electric Picnic at Stradbally in Co Laois.

Actor Sean Penn, actress Natalie Portman, supermodel Christy Turlington, Twilight star Jamie Campbell Bower and his Harry Potter girlfriend Bonnie Wright, are expected to join some of the biggest names in music for the event.

Bright sunshine and blue skies today helped kick off the festival, though more mixed conditions are forecast for the weekend.

More than a dozen stages will be filled with the sounds of more than 200 top acts over the next three days, including Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, Massive Attack and LCD Soundsystem.

Legends

But the endless list of music legends taking to the stages won't be the only star attractions at this year's jam-packed musicfest.

Celebrities from the worlds of TV, sport, fashion and film will be among the welly wearers donning their best boutique festival clobber.

Other famous faces include actor Ed Burns, Wag Claudine Palmer, newlyweds Brian O'Driscoll and Amy Huberman, Xpose presenter Glenda Gilson, TV presenter Darren Kennedy and models Georgia Salpa, Michelle McGrath and Nadia Forde.

No stranger to the Irish festival scene, actress Natalie Portman is also rumoured to be among the stars flying in to take a break from her European promotional tour for her new movie, Black Swan.

Revellers are expected to be in better spirits than ever as our unexpected Indian summer will see temperatures soar to 22 degrees again today.

But while sunscreen will be a festival essential for the first visitors today, they are warned to pack their best rain gear as the rest of the weekend is expected to bring occasional downpours.

Friday night will be mild and dry in most areas. However rain will spread in from daybreak to all parts during Saturday, though amounts will be small.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy and breezy.
