Love/Hate team show they know the score

VARIOUS ARTISTS Love/Hate -- Music From The RTE Series (EMI)

Straight off the bat, I can think of at least three superior gangster movie soundtracks. The bat in question being a baseball bat, which inevitably plays a starring role in any drama depicting criminal endeavour.

Goodfellas springs to mind with the evocative choreography between Ray Liotta (as Henry Hill) and a police surveillance helicopter played out against Harry Nilsson's Jump Into the Fire and the Mick Jagger-Ry Cooder cut Memo From Turner.

This innocuous scene is more potent than that overcooked torture dance in Reservoir Dogs to Stuck in the Middle With You by Stealer's Wheel.

Mind you, that soundtrack album sounded more realistic the night I was driven around Manchester with Shaun Ryder and his scallies.

But I'm not a movie buff. I just like me choons. And, from childhood to the grave, the emotional highs and lows of our existence can be mapped out by a selection of memorable tracks.

Since he used the doo-wop classic Rubber Biscuit in Mean Streets, director Martin Scorsese has proved himself the master of underpinning dramatic scenes with pop songs. The Love/Hate crew no doubt admire Guy Ritchie's tune selection for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which throws in a few reggae cuts with some Nineties baggy anthems.

Crucially the music needs to reflect the environment, something not all directors understand.


So it's automatic that in Dublin 2012, Kelis and Rihanna should feature alongside Joe Dolan, the closest we have to Scorsese's Louis Prima. Having R Kelly and Jay Z share space with The Ramones and Iggy and the Stooges is brave and accurate.

Nina Simone (ten minutes of Sinnerman), The Roots (two tracks), Ja Rule, Mobb Deep ... this is too good. And all credit for featuring the great Linval Carter (aka Prince Jazzbo).

This is the coolest film score since Ray Charles was filmed in the Gaiety in 1964. Respect. HHHHI
