1D take the big prize... but not for Niall's violin playing

ONE Direction rarely leave an awards ceremony without at least a couple of gongs these days – and so it was with the Radio 1 Teen Awards.

The boyband, including Mullingar's Niall Horan, were named Best British Group and won Best Single for Best Song Ever at the event in London's Wembley Arena.

Tinie Tempah, Rizzle Kicks and Jessie J were among the performers at the Teen Awards, with special guests including Taylor Swift and Little Mix handing out the accolades.

For their latest single release, Niall and his bandmates – Harry, Zayn, Liam and Louis – are all taking a trip down memory lane with a series of cute snaps showing them as toddlers.

For his part, Niall tries to show that he really is a simple guy at heart. The 19-year-old was all smiles when he enjoyed some quality time with his big brother and an impromptu jamming session.

The former X Factor star proved that his music ambitions didn't just begin when he entered the singing contest as a wide-eyed 16-year-old in 2010.

Instead, Niall says that having a go at an instrument and standing in front of a microphone was a regular childhood pastime in the Horan household.

Niall was sharing the limelight with brother Greg for One Direction's next hit, Story of My Life.

One snap shows Niall standing with a violin in the front room of his Mullingar home.

With his blond locks and v-neck sweater, he showed how far he's come from a country boy with stars in his eyes.
