Madonna looks pants again as younger stars rock Billboards

SHE got panned for wearing lingerie at the Met Ball.

But criticism for Madonna (54) is just water off a duck's back.

And so once again she decided to forego trousers, or a skirt, at last night's Billboard awards – opting to show her underwear again.

Completing the look with a pair of dark sunglasses, Madonna accepted the award for Touring Artist Of The Year Award with will.i.am by her side.

While mum-of-four Madonna looked confident onstage, will.i.am appeared to look slightly uncomfortable standing beside the Queen of Pop, choosing to look anywhere but at Madonna and her outfit.

But, unlikely as it seems, Madonna had some competition when it came to wearing an outfit that would have the fashion police up in arms.

Jennifer Lopez appeared to be channelling her inner Big Bird when she took to the stage.

Wearing a red-sequinned leotard and thigh-high red leather boots, the singer appeared to be wearing red poms poms on her arms. Wardrobe choices aside, last night's awards ceremony in Las Vegas were dominated by Taylor Swift.

Swift won eight of 11 awards, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for Red.

And poking fun at reports of her colourful and much reported love life, the 22-year-old told the crowd: "You are the longest and best relationship I ever had."

She also had a colourful performance of her hit 22 – starting backstage and working her way to the main stage on the back of a bike with help from a dozen background dancers and a flurry of red balloons.

Justin Bieber scooped three awards – including top male artist, social artist and the fan-voted milestone award, beating out Swift and Bruno Mars.

Boos were heard emanating through the auditorium when he was announced as winner of the milestone awards.

When accepting this award, the Canadian alluded to the controversies that have dogged him in recent months.

"I'm 19 years old – I think I'm doing a pretty good job. And basically from my heart I really just want to say it should really be about the music, it should be about the craft that I'm making. This is not a gimmick.

"I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken."

Bieber performed with will.i.am and solo when he sang Take You in leather pants, a leather vest and black shirt that had one sleeve.

Maroon 5 and fun. were also nominated for 11 awards and walked away with one win each in pre-telecast announcements.

Gotye and Rihanna had the second-most wins with four awards each.

For most fans, the Billboard Music Awards are less about the trophies, and more about the performances.

Selena Gomez – rumoured to be back in a relationship with on-off again beau Bieber – sang her new hit Come And Get It while the ever-controversial Chris Brown danced around to his song Fine China, although his voice appeared to crack during the performance.

Prince, who received the icon award, closed the awards show rocking an afro and bell-bottoms.
