It's happiest day of my life, says new dad Graeme

Northern Irish golfer Graeme McDowell has become a proud new dad.

Graeme's wife Kristen gave birth to a baby girl by caesarean section yesterday afternoon and the PGA-winning golfer took to Twitter to announce their good news, tweeting: "Thanks so much for all the well wishes. Mum and baby girl are happy and healthy. Happiest moment of my life hands down. #daddy #love".

The new dad won't be playing the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston this weekend in order to spend time with Kristen and the new addition to their family.

Having completed his final round at the BMW Championship on Sunday, McDowell told the Golf Channel: "My caddie has been telling me all year 'you're not going to want to go to Boston', so I've decided to give myself the weekend off."

Rory McIlroy (pictured) congratulated the couple, saying: "Congrats @Graeme_McDowell and @kristinstape on the birth of your beautiful baby girl! #DaddyGMac".

McDowell previously confessed that his relationship with McIlroy was "strained" by the court case after McIlroy's lawyers claimed the Portrush man was a shareholder in Horizon Sports management and on a more favourable deal.

Graeme (35) has since announced that he is leaving Horizon to manage his own affairs and has insisted that any tension would not affect their potential partnership on the Ryder Cup team.

Explaining his departure from Horizon, he said: "I am at a stage in my life where it feels right to move on to the next phase of my career - both in golf and business."

Graeme and Kristen (34) married in an elaborate ceremony in the Bahamas last October; a year after Graeme proposed at the Burj Al Arab helipad in Dubai in October 2012.

McDowell met Kristen, who is an interior designer, when he hired her company to work on his Lake Nona home in 2010.
