I'll host Rose for as long as I can - Daithi

ROSE of Tralee host Daithi O Se has set his sights on making this year the best competition yet.

Preparations for the annual August festival are well under way and the dad-of-one admitted it'll be "very hard" to top last year's on-stage marriage proposal.

Kerryman Daithi (37) has been making the most of several weeks off before returning to the helm of the long-running event and told the Herald that he's vying for a few changes to the format to keep it fresh.

"We're going to try and change it up a bit again this year, throw in a couple of newer elements, although it'll be hard to beat last year," he said.

"I'm looking forward to getting stuck in again though."

The former TG4 weatherman said he's happy to carry on as the MC for as long as RTE wants him.

"It gets good ratings and I'll keep doing it as long as they want me to," he said.

Daithi has been adapting to life as a father, after himself and his American wife Rita Talty welcomed their first child, four-month-old son Michael óg, in March.

While on hiatus from his RTE afternoon show Today, the broadcaster made the most of time off and spent six weeks in Rita's native New Jersey.

"It was a long enough stint, so I was happy to come back to reality," he said. "Rita and baby only came back from the US this weekend, so I was away from them for a few days which is kind of tough."
