Hozier's a hit ... 70 million times over





Hozier's world domination looks set to continue as his debut album was streamed 70 million times last week.

The Bray native's manager Caroline Downey revealed that his hit Take Me To Church was downloaded from iTunes 16 million times - and is being streamed 10 million times a week.

"In streaming, he had 70 million plays for all of the songs, with 35 million for Take Me to Church. He's averaging 10 million per week," she said.

The MCD boss has also explained how she discovered Ireland's newest music star.

"He was in school with my daughter and I saw him in a school concert," she revealed.

"It really started with me helping him. I never had any intention of managing him. It wasn't part of the plan.

"We decided to put Take me to Church up and see what happened. It was to see the reaction. It just went viral."

Downey went on to secure a unique deal with three record labels, which have divided up the globe between them.


"Within two weeks eight or nine A&R men had landed in Ireland. It got to where there was a bidding war. We stopped that, because it wasn't about the money," she said.

"It was about support on the ground and how many albums they'd release."

Under the deal, Hozier will release two albums, with an option for another three.

Hozier's debut album was released just over a week ago and debuted at number two in the US.

"As a result of this young guy who released a video online is now number two in the USA. That would have taken forever. It has changed music forever, people will keep being discovered on the internet," Downey told the Sunday Independent.

The former Trinity College student's hit track has also recently been used in a new Beats headphones ad featuring LeBron James.

The ad has been viewed more than 10 million times online.

Take Me To Church has also been used on the soundtrack for Bad Pitt's new war film Fury.

Hozier will be back in the studio to start work on his second album at the start of 2016.
