Food fanatic David given a gooey send oFF by pals ahead of wedding

HE'S soon set to tie the knot and retired athlete David Gillick was given a food-friendly send off into married life by his friends over the weekend.

The 400m champion runner will say 'I Do' with his long-term girlfriend Charlotte Wickham later this month.

And before travelling over to the UK for their nuptials, David's football pals at Ballinteer St John's decided to wish him luck in unforgettable fashion.

Even though he had surgery on his nose last week following a GAA accident, David lined out with his team mates on Saturday for a game.

However, his afternoon did not quite end the way he planned, as the 31-year-old was handcuffed to a lamp post, pitch side and covered in flour and eggs by fellow players.

David and his bride-to-be met in 2007 and got engaged over Christmas, while in her native Sunderland. One for tradition, he asked Charlotte's parents permission four months prior to proposing. He and Charlotte will marry in front of close friends and family in the Lake District in the UK on August 23.

The Celebrity Masterchef 2013 winner will be put his skills in the kitchen to some use by baking one of the three wedding cakes for his big day.

"I'm going to make a cake so we're going to have an array on the table," he said.

After announcing his official retirement this summer, David is getting used to life post-athletics and is embarking on a rising career in TV thanks to his Masterchef stint.

In addition to launching his own range of Sandwich Thins with Johnston Mooney & O'Brien, he is enjoying a slot on Ireland AM.
