Films: From Paris with Love * * *

(Action/thriller. Starring John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Directed by Pierre Morel. cert 16)

Given that taken proved to be such a huge hit at the US box-office -- and allowed Liam Neeson to get in touch with his inner Charles Bronson in the process -- it made perfect sense for writer Luc Besson and director Pierre Morel to trot out the same tricks again. Paris is again the backdrop for murder and mayhem, as a US embassy employee (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) wants to advance to black-ops work, but gets more than he planned for when he's teamed up with special operative Charlie Wax (John Travolta), a man whose methods are rather extreme.

Travolta's performance begins at 10 on the bull-goose loony scale and proceeds to shoot ever upwards in a movie which is low on sense, but Everest-high on two-handed shoot-outs, screeching car chases and numerous explosions. Daft but entertaining.
