Sheridan: Film foretold end of Troubles

FILMMAKER Jim Sheridan has claimed his Oscar-winning movie In The Name Of The Father foreshadowed what was to happen in the peace process.

Late British actor Pete Postlethwaite was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal in the 1993 film of Giuseppe Conlon (right), an innocent man falsely imprisoned as the father of one of the Guildford Four.

"Look, I'm not claiming anything for In The Name Of The Father, but when I did that movie there was the Troubles on, there was a war," he said.

"And I got a lot of stick for it, but I put the non-violent father back in the middle of the discourse.

"That was my aim, to make the non-violent father really powerful.

"A few years later, less than five or six years later, the peace process does the same kind of thing.

"I'm not saying I was prescient, it was luck, but first comes the idea."

Sheridan (64) was speaking at the Dubai International Film Festival where he is chairing the jury for the Muhr Arab Feature competition in the Madinat Jumeirah Complex.

Postlethwaite starred in Sheridan's film with Daniel Day-Lewis.
