Is our Fodhla on her way to an Oscar?

A JOB with a leading film production company, a chance to work with one of Ireland's greatest film-makers and now buzz about an Oscar nomination -- it has been a great few months for one of Ireland's brightest young film producers.

Irish film graduate Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly (26) could be rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's elite after making the shortlist for a 2013 Oscar nomination.

Fodhla's 11-minute short film Head Over Heels, directed by American Timothy Reckart, was one of just 10 animations announced in the shortlist for the 2013 Oscar's Short Films and Feature Animation category.

"There have been a lot of people showing an interest in the film which has been great," Fodhla told the Herald.

And the talented producer, who hails from Co Kerry, revealed that the Oscar news is just an added bonus after she bagged a dream job with Parallel Films in London and the chance to work with renowned Irish producer Alan Maloney.

Fodhla describes Dubliner Maloney, who produced hit Irish films Intermission, Breakfast On Pluto, Perrier's Bounty and A Film With Me In It, as her greatest inspiration.

"I'm learning so much from him and he's the type of producer who is so in tune creatively and yet he's got a massive grasp on the business side. That's rare in a producer," Fodhla said.

"Just to be even in the same room as him talking ideas for stories with him, I feel so privileged," added Fodhla.

Head Over Heels was her first animation film and could bring with it an invitation to the Oscar ceremony early next year.

"It would be amazing to get selected into the 3-5 nominees. But even to get into the final 10 is brilliant and hopefully we will make it into the nominees."

It is up against some stiff competition, including Disney's Paperman.
