Fassbender to play Macbeth in new movie

Ireland's sexiest man Michael Fassbender has landing the starring role in a new movie of Macbeth.

The Co Kerry actor has portrayed everything from a brooding vampire to a sex-addict, but now he can add Shakespeare's Scottish king to to his 'villain' list

This new adaptation of the play will retain the 11th-century setting and original language as well as gory battle scenes.

Shakespeare's play has been tackled in the past by directors such as Roman Polanski (pictured inset), Akira Kurosawa and Orson Welles.

This time around the film falls into the hands of See Saw, the company behind Steve McQueen's Shame and the Oscar-winning The King's Speech.

Fassbender is the only actor to have signed on so far and the actress that will play the female lead, Lady Macbeth, has yet to be cast.

The script of the latest adaption of Macbeth, which will be directed by Justin Kurzel, attracted huge attention at the Cannes Film Festival. Filming is expected to begin later this year.

Raised in Killarney, Co Kerry, the 36-year-old first made waves when he starred in box office hit 300 in 2006.

He has since go on to star in science fiction flick Prometheus last year and 2009 war film Inglourious Basterds.

He will next be seen in the historical drama Twelve Years A Slave, which marks his third collaboration with director Steve McQueen after hit movies Hunger and Shame.
