MICHAEL Fassbender will walk down the Oscars red carpet with his mum on his arm while family and friends will be proudly watching from his hometown in Kerry.

It is one of the biggest nights of his career, and although he is dating model Madalina Ghenea, the 36-year-old actor decided his mother Adele and sister Catherine would be the ideal dates.

The entire country will holding its breath to see if the 12 Years A Slave star bags his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 86th Academy Awards in LA tomorrow night.

Excitement was at fever pitch yesterday in St Brendan's College, Killarney, as students prepared to tune in to watch the superstar past-pupil compete for a gong.

As well as his dad Josef, Michael's college principal Sean Coffey backed him to scoop the prize.

Three of his old teachers – Mike Leahy, Mary O'Donoghue and Lou O'Flaherty – will be keeping a special eye on proceedings too.

While Michael may be the only Irish actor actually up for an award, Irish celebrities have been flocking to pre-Oscar bashes all over Hollywood this week.

Model mum Claudine Keane turned out to the famous Oscar Wilde party with her soccer legend husband Robbie to help toast this year's honourees, comedian Conan O'Brien and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley.

Irish actress Sarah Bolger (22) also attended the do, held at producer JJ Abrams' Bad Robot in Santa Monica, as well as Katie McGrath and Love/Hate's Jason Barry.
