THEY were always going to opt something a bit unusual, but Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have outdone themselves this time.
The couple have shot to the top of the list of celebrity parents who give their children odd names, after calling their newborn daughter North West.
A leaked copy of the birth certificate shows the little girl has been named after a point on the compass.
It is reported that they will call the baby Nori for short and the child will have no middle name.
Officially Kanye (36) and Kim (32) have not revealed the baby name, but gossip website TMZ claims to seen a birth certificate from the hospital.
Reality TV star Kim gave birth to a 5lb baby last Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles – a month ahead of her due date.
Speculation had been rife that the pair had named the baby Kaidence Donda West, after Kanye's late mother Dr Donda West – but those rumours have now been dismissed.
Kanye is said to be fiercely protective of little North.
It has been claimed the proud dad is vehemently opposed to having his daughter featured on any of the Kardashian family's reality TV programmes.
Apparently Kardashian matriarch-and-manager Kris Jenner was able to film a portion of the birth, but only under Kanye's strict direction.
"The camera crew did attempt to accompany Kim into the hospital," the source added.
"When Kanye arrived, he told them to get lost, which they did.
"Kanye didn't want this precious moment to be documented for TV.
"Kim's manager, Kris, who was in the delivery room, filmed portions of it for family viewing only. Kanye told Kris when she could film."
North has been described as having dark hair and the same smile as her mother.
The name North had previously been suggested as a possibility for the child but was widely disregarded as a joke.
In March, Kim denied rumours that Kanye wanted to name the baby North.
"I do like Easton, Easton West," she joked on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno at the time.
It now seems that the couple settled on North and that Kaidence was a close second on the list. Kim was reported to like the idea of calling the baby Kai for short.
