FILM-MAKER Sam Mendes could be heading back to Bond despite saying he would not sign up to make the next film after his success with Skyfall.

The Oscar-winner originally turned down the chance to make the next instalment in 007's adventures to concentrate on his theatre work, but he is now believed to be back in discussions with producers.

Mendes said he wanted to focus on his stage work, including a production of King Lear in London.

But a plan that would see work on the next Bond film delayed so Mendes can see the theatre productions through is now being discussed, sources close to the director said.

Skyfall picked up five Oscar nominations and won two, and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has said she is determined to tempt Mendes back.

Ajay Chowdhury, from the James Bond International Fan Club, said fans would rejoice if Mendes did return.

He added: "News that a new Bond is on its way sooner rather than later is like hearing the perfect purr of an Aston Martin engine."
